Santa Rosa Community System, Inc. - Recycle Santa Rosa
HOW CAN I RECYCLE?
Take recyclable items to a recycle center. Click here to locate a recycle center near you.
We have containers for the following items:
Paper – Any paper product that is not wax or plastic coated or contaminated by food. Examples: Cardboard, paper, books (helpful to remove the cover), & junk mail, folders, glossy ads.
Glass – Clear, green or brown jars and bottles ONLY. You do not have to take the labels off.
Metal – Steel, tin, and aluminum cans. Once again, you do not have to remove the labels.
Plastics - #1 thru #7, but not oil containers and 5 gallon buckets
Not Recyclable:
Pizza Boxes, cheese bags, snack bags, plate glass, auto glass, stained glass, aluminum foil, sheet metal, oil containers, buckets, styrofoam, mattresses, furniture, appliances, used plant pots ...
If its messy and large and won't fit in the containers please DON'T leave it. Stick to the 4 types of items listed above. Please see below for recommendations for recycling some of the items the Recycle Center can't process.
Helpful information for use of our recycle centers:
Put Everything INTO the Center's Containers!
If a section is full, put it in another section. No room in the bottles container, put it in the paper section. No room in the paper section, put it in the plastics sections. Please don’t pile stuff around the centers, as valuable time (translates to $$) is wasted picking it up.
Cardboard Boxes
The biggest waste of space in the recycle containers is cardboard boxes, because of the amount of dead air they create. Simple solution?
Break down your boxes and make them flat. The amount of room saved is simply unbelievable.
Plastic, Metal and Glass containers
To rinse or not to rinse? Rinsing is NOT a requirement, however, consider the workers at the recycling center. Some things, notably milk jugs, have quite a smell after they have set for a while. So, if you want to help, please rinse out anything that will create a bad smell after sitting for a while. Labels will burn off in the recycling process, so don’t worry about them.
Don’t Give Us What We Can’t Recycle
We would love to be able to recycle everything, but if you place items in the center that we can’t recycle it simply takes more work to sort it out and throw it away. A good simple rule with glass, metal and plastic is only containers.
We currently cannot recycle plate glass, styrofoam of any kind or any paper contaminated with food and we are NOT a dump for your unwanted furniture and appliances. PLEASE take those items to the County Landfill. For Santa Rosa County Landfill information/locations click here.

Used Motor Oil
Motor oil is a hazardous waste and should never be dumped in the trash, poured down the drain or dumped or buried in the ground.A single quart of motor oil can pollute 250,000 gallons of water! We have oil recycling at the gate to Central Landfill (and it's FREE) and almost all oil change stores and garages will take your old oil.

Santa Rosa County Recycling Presentation
Santa Rosa Clean Community System is the education and outreach organization for recycling for Santa Rosa County. We do presentations to various civic groups, promote and educate in the schools, and work to beautify Santa Rosa recycling sites.

We have applied the Recycle Guys provided by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to decorate some of our recycling centers.
We have a goal to have recycling in all Santa Rosa Schools. We are educating the students and teachers and supplying recycling containers in all classrooms and offices.

PRESS RELEASE
Allied Waste Donates Recycling Containers
Allied Waste has donated over 500 recycling containers to the Santa Rosa Clean Community System for distribution in Santa Rosa County Schools. The goal of the system is to have containers in all county schools that are recycling or have the desire to do so. The donation of these containers will go a long way toward meeting that goal. The containers are currently being distributed to local schools.
“We are grateful to Allied for stepping up and helping with this very important program,” says John Tonkin, Director of the Clean Community System. “As we all realize, promoting an environmental ethic in our schools will help shape future citizens that are aware of the importance of good stewardship of our natural resources. In addition, many times the young people will be the ones who set up and monitor a recycling program in their homes.”
“This donation is a perfect example of a public/private partnership, which connects the entire community. This is something that we try to do as often as possible and Allied has certainly been a wonderful partner.”
