Santa Rosa Clean Community Awarded 2009 Impact 100 Grant

Pensacola Bay Area Impact 100

On Sunday, October 18, 2009, the Santa Rosa Clean Community System was named the winner in the Environment category for the Impact 100 grant. The grant award is for $102,800 and will be used to set up a completely new and innovative glass recycling program.

For the past several years, all glass collected by Recycle Santa Rosa has been landfilled because of the lack of recycling facilities for glass. Shipping to the closest facility was cost prohibitive, and the result was that about 200,000 pounds of glass each month were being collected and landfilled. The grant calls for the purchase of a glass processing machine that crushes and tumbles the glass. The final product is free of sharp edges, can be processed in a variety of sizes and can be used as a replacement for sand, rock and other materials. The product is so safe that children can play on it and people can walk on it. One of the first applications will be for use as landscape mulch. The mulch is shiny and beautiful and serves the same purpose as other mulches: it holds moisture in the ground around the plant and keeps the root system cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Other uses in the initial stage of the project are for drainfields in septic lines and art applications.

Q's & A's

Where will the glass be processed?

The glass will be collected as it always has been, through our drop off centers - the processing machine will be located on the recycling line at our recycling building at Central landfill.

When will it be available?

We anticipate having the building up before the end of 2009, then we order the machine, which could take up to 90 days - we will then make it available for county and city projects and begin demonstrations for septic companys, artists and other targeted groups - the mulch should be available around mid-year 2010.

Where will it be available and how do I get some?

It will be available through "innovation stations" - the initial plan is to have it available here at the Santa Rosa Clean office in Milton (6758 Park Avenue); in Pace at the 5 Points Recycling location and a spot in the south-end of the County to be determinded.

How will it be sold .. bagged, bulk, etc?

Initially there will be piles of it for people to take - the plan calls for the product to be free to the public for the first year and to re-evaluate it after that point.

Will Santa Rosa Clean Community System (or Santa Rosa County) make money from sales of the product?

Eventually we hope to.

What colors will it come in?

We are going to attempt to sort colors right from the beginning, will know more after we work with the machine a while.

Are there various size “stones”?

There will be various sizes, we have to experiment to see which sizes are practical to produce.

Anything else we need to know?

We will know a lot more after we get the building in place and begin to work with the machine.
